This dig will take place on the farm where were were originally doing a one day visit to 50 acres of pasture. Due to poor ground conditions it was cancelled but we now have 200+ acres of arable land available which will consist of winter wheat stubble, cultivated rape stubble and some pasture. The farmer will cultivate the rape stubble prior to our arrival.
Beetley was part of the Manor of Elmham, held by William Beaufoe, Bishop of Thetford, with the name deriving from the two Anglo Saxon words betel and bietel, both words applying to a clearing where wooden mallets are made.
The camping field is opposite the farm and we will have water available, toilets on site and will be once again supported by Nigel at Foodie Doodies for full catering over the weekend.
Some of our fields are in view of St Mary-Magdalen’s Church.
The Church is believed to be built on the site mentioned in the Doomsday Book (1087) and is dated to 1320.
The cost for this weekend will be £50 and as our new membership will be in force by the time this event takes place, please only register if you are joining us as a full member.
