Buckinghamshire Rally 6th August 2017. 200 Acres Available.

For those of you attending the Buckinghamshire dig tomorrow, the postcode is MK18 4AE. We have an excess of land on this one so if anyone fancies joining us, please just turn up and sign in on the day. All new ground to us so hoefully lost of nice finds. Signs will be out, Admin on the gate, please make sure your bring refreshments as we will not be on site with the teas and coffees on this one. Have a safe journey all going And happy hunting!

This dig will take place on a 200 acre permission just acquired near the village of TIngewick, about 2.5 miles west of Buckingham in the Aylesbury Vale district of Buckinghamshire. The land will likely consist of a variety of conditions.

Please note a club of 30 visited this farm on one occasion 5 years ago and two visits of half a dozen people have subsequently been made. Roman finds were declared to the farmer.  Obviously that amount of people on such a large area would have resulted in minimal coverage.

Tingewick

The remains of a Roman villa provide evidence of early habitation in the parish. It is about 440 yards (400 m) northeast of the village, about 200 yards (180 m) from the river and lies east of Tingewick Mill. The villa was partly excavated in 1860-62.

The toponym is derived from the Old English for “Teoda’s dwelling”. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the village as Tedinwiche.

The earliest part of the Church of England parish church of Saint Mary Magdalene is the Norman 12th century nave. The three-bay north aisle was added in about 1200. The Perpendicular gothic chancel and bell-tower were added late in the 15th century. The north aisle was altered in the 17th century, the south aisle was added in 1830 and the south porch in 1867

The tower has a ring of five bells. The oldest was cast in London in about 1490 and is inscribed Nomen Magdalene Campana Gerit Melodie. The second bell was cast by Bartholomew Atton of Buckingham in 1591. Robert Atton of Buckingham cast the fourth bell in 1623 and the treble bell in 1627. The youngest bell in the ring is the tenor, cast by Henry Bagley III of Chacombe and Witney in 1721.

Hi Chris/Paul, I’m registered for this Sunday’s rally. For your number count, I’ll be bringing James Naden with me, he was a member but hasn’t renewed yet. Looking forward to the dig and catching up.

No place is a ‘bad place’ Martin, when we haven’t been there before. Numbers are different on all events depending on the country location, what other rallies are on the same day etc.
