All about our permission

The location we will be detecting on is less than a mile, by road, from the deserted medieval village of Cold Weston.
Cold Weston used to lay on a north facing slope at about 260 metres above sea level. Its main street ran up the slope, and can now be seen as a splendid holloway with house platforms at the southern end to the west of the church. Houses may also have occupied the earthworks north east of the church.

A thirteenth century document refers to a water mill at Cold Weston. It has been suggested that a large dammed area near the house platforms may have been the site of the mill pond. Two channels leave it on the north side and may have supplied water to a mill a little further down the hill. A smaller pond higher up the slope may have been a supplementary reservoir or else a fishpond.

The church at Cold Weston, dedicated to St Mary, dates from the early twelfth century. A number of features, including the twin ogee-arched windows at the east end, were added in the fourteenth century.

Our farm location comes under the parish of Stoke St. Millborough.

Stoke and Stanton manors were settled by 1086. There was a church at Stoke c. 1200, which seems to have incorporated vestiges of an earlier one. There was a mill at Stoke by 1334. Wool and woollen cloth seem to have been important products of the parish in the 14th century. In 1340, the parish’s crops were devastated by storms, flocks dwindled and 11 tenants abandoned their holdings. In 1581, the lord of Stoke reserved to himself any mines on the waste and in 1637 he had mines of ironstone and limestone, which he was alleged to let to poor people at expensive rates. Limestone was being quarried in Stoke manor in 1637.

You must report treasure to the local coroner within 14 days of finding it.
You only need to report items officially defined as treasure.

There’s an unlimited fine or up to 3 months in prison for not reporting treasure.

You can voluntarily report items to the Portable Antiquities Scheme if they aren’t treasure but are still of cultural or historical interest. This is to help keep a record of all finds in England and Wales.

After a find is reported, a local Finds Liaison Officer will contact you to talk about how and where you made the find and to give you a receipt.

They’ll write a report on the find. Museums can express an interest in it if it’s treasure.

The coroner will then hold an inquest. You may be invited to the inquest, along with the site occupier and landowner of where the treasure was found, and given the opportunity to ask questions.

If a museum wants the treasure the Treasure Valuation Committee will decide how much the treasure is worth and how much will go to anyone entitled to a share of the find.

You’ll have the chance to comment on the valuation, along with the site occupier and landowner, or send your own valuation for the committee to consider.

You can also ask the committee to review any decision about the value of the find, or appeal to the Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) if they still disagree after a review.

Who gets a share of the reward?? You may get a share of the reward if you’re:

the finder, and had permission to be on the land and acted in good faith
a person or organisation with freehold on the land
someone who occupies the land as a tenant of the owner
Archaeologists aren’t entitled to a share of any reward. If you act in bad faith (eg by trespassing or trying to hide the find) you may get a reduced share of the reward, or none at all.

It can take up to 1 year from when the treasure was found until the reward is paid (it’s longer for large or disputed finds).

If the find doesn’t count as treasure or no museum wants it the items will be returned to you, and the landowner and site occupier informed. They have the chance to object within 28 days.

The coroner will keep the find until any disputes are resolved.

Attendees will we welcome to arrive on the Friday after 3.30 to set up in preparation for the weekend and can stay until the Monday if necessary to avoid having to leave early to travel.

Minelab will be in attendance on Saturday with a full range of equipment and accessories and plenty of advice!

This event is open to all, you do not have to have a Minelab detector!
