Spath, the location of our permission, is a small village north of Uttoxeter. al.

Spath is on the River Tean and is divided from Uttoxeter by the A50 road.

We are just half a mile from Stramshall, which has an entry in the Domesday Book of 1085.[3] In the great book Stramshall is recorded by the name Stagrigesholle. The manor was owned by the King. The main tenant was Alric who had owned the manor before the Norman Conquest.

We are also just under 2m from Utoxetter.

Uttoxeter’s name has had at least 79 spellings since it was mentioned in the Domesday Book as “Wotocheshede”:[3] it probably came from Anglo-SaxonWuttuceshǣddre = “Wuttuc’s homestead on the heath”. Some historians point to pre-Roman settlement here and Bronze Age axes have been discovered in the town (now in display in the Potteries Museum in Stoke-on-Trent). It is possible that Uttoxeter had some form of Roman activity due to its strategic position on the River Dove and closeness to the large garrison forts at Rocester between 69 and 400 AD, and the recently discovered fort at Stramshall, though little corroborating archaeology has been found.

We are informed there is an ancient milestone on the land and some Roman interest!

It is a requirement of Let’s Go Digging Ltd that any person attending any LGD event MUST bring their membership cards or if they are NOT a paid member they will be required to bring Photo Identification to every event they attend. This must be shown when paying on entry to the event.
Failure to provide either of these may result in you being turned away from that event. You will also need to show this I.D when showing us finds before leaving the event. Thank you
